1 Forgot Windows Password on Mon Aug 04, 2008 7:54 am

Co-worker just asked if there was a way to figure out what your password is if you forgot it. Any suggestions?

I was going to suggest booting up in safe mode, log on as administrator, backup their files, delete the user they forgot the password to and create a new account and not forget the password this time. Or not use a password at all since they didn't think it was important enough to remember the first time.

Is there a better/easier way to find out what the password is on a windows machine?

There probably exists a Linux boot disk that will let you change their password to whatever you want with about 5 minutes work. Note, these disks do not crack the password, they just assign them a new one. Of course, you can do this if you have Administrator access anyway.

Passwords are heavily encrypted, figuring what it was wouldn't be easy. Your best bet is probably just to log in as admin and change the PW on their account.
